27th Infantry Division DVD

Having participated in the recapture of Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands in late November, 1943, elements of the 27th landed at night on Saipan in support of the US 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions on June 16th 1944, helping clear the Island of all enemy resistance by early August. In Okinawa they seized the first strategic airfield at Machinato, cleared the northern sector of Okinawa, and fought for Onnatake Hill. Some units helped transport the first Atomic bomb to the Enola Gay. After VJ Day, the 27th occupied the Niigata and Fukushima Prefectures in Japan.
