Ode to Joy and Freedom:
the Fall of the Berlin Wall
From its construction in 1961 to its dismantlement in 1989, the Berlin Wall symbolized the divisions created by the infamous Cold War. To convey its dramatic story, this program combines rare archival film and recent news-video footage for an unforgettable hour of history in the making recorded by some of the men and women who lived it. After reviewing the history of the Wall, the program covers the historic mass protest in Leipzig and the other events that led to the fall of the East German Communist Government. It provides extensive footage of the events of November 9th, 1989, when East Berliners were able to cross the Wall freely for the first time in almost three decades; the destruction of the Wall; and the subsequent New Year's Day celebrations, which featured a massive fireworks display. Color, Germany, 1990, 54 minutes, English commentary.
