The First Great Escape DVD (WW1 POW Escape)

Amazing forgotten story of First World War POW’s who tunnelled out of camp using CUTLERY

It is one of the best-known stories of WW2, popularized by the 1963 film starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough. But what few people realize is that the 1944 Great Escape was inspired by an even more audacious getaway, orchestrated more than 20 years earlier. Camp Commandant Karl Niemeyer, a vindictive and arrogant man who had an appalling reputation for mistreatment, boasted from the outset that Holzminden was impossible to escape from. This is the story of the twenty-nine British officers who proved him wrong in July 1918. Together, they spent ten months constructing a tunnel right under the noses of their German captors. Ten of them were able to complete the journey to neutral Holland, and they returned to England as heroes. Historians believe the First World War Holzminden plot inspired the legendary breakout from Stalag Luft III prison camp 25 years later, which was was immortalized in the 1963 film The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen. Docu-drama.
