One of the Most Malevolent and Odious Pieces of Propaganda of All Time
Der ewige Jude (The Eternal Jew), directed by Fritz Hippler in 1940, stands as one of the most insidious propaganda films of the Nazi era. Its purpose was to perpetuate the dehumanizing myth of Jews as "swindlers and parasites," an idea deeply rooted in traditional European anti-Semitism and fervently promoted by Nazi ideology. With footage shot in Poland and Germany, the film manipulates images of Jewish ghetto life to present Jews as the embodiment of societal decay. Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, was personally invested in the film's production, sending crews to occupied Poland to capture scenes of Jewish suffering and deprivation, distorting them for hateful effect. Released soon after the commercial success of Jew Suess, another anti-Semitic film, Der ewige Jude was even more venomous, aiming to incite hatred and reinforce Hitler's declaration that Jews would face annihilation if blamed for another world war. However, the film's grotesque portrayal failed to achieve widespread resonance. As diarist Victor Klemperer noted, it disappeared from theaters quickly due to public "weariness and disgust." The enduring infamy of Der ewige Jude lies in its role as a chilling artifact of Nazi propaganda, a film designed to foster genocide and justify mass murder under the guise of racial purity.Directed by Fritz Hippler.
