Product Description

Velnio Nuotaka (English title: "The Devil's Bride"), released in 1974, is a landmark Lithuanian-Soviet musical film directed by Arūnas Žebriūnas. Adapted from Kazys Boruta's novel "Baltaragis's Mill", it blends rock opera elements with Lithuanian folklore, surreal imagery, and themes of love, redemption, and the supernatural. The story follows the devil Pinčiukas, who falls for a mortal woman, leading to chaotic, folkloric antics involving rituals, demons, and a longing for heaven. Composed by Viačeslavas Ganelinas with cinematography by Algimantas Mockus, it's celebrated for its vibrant visuals, wailing guitar ballads, and influences from Western rock (e.g., Rolling Stones) amid Soviet-era constraints. It was the first Soviet musical, a cult hit in Lithuania, and praised for its originality despite Russian cinematic echoes. Bonus Material New video interview with Monika Edgar, director Arūnas Žebriūnas’ daughter, about her father’s career and the making of THE DEVIL’S BRIDE New video interview with Lithuanian film critic Ieva Šukytė about the history of Lithuanian cinema and THE DEVIL’S BRIDE New visual essay by Dr. Will Dodson and Ryan Verrill of Someone's Favorite Productions 1st ever U.S. Blu-ray release, newly restored by the Lithuanian Film Centre
