Karl Ritter (Director, Producer)
Karl Ritter (1888-1977) was one of the Third Reich' s most important
filmmakers. As a WWI veteran, aviation pioneer, very early NSDAP
member (1925), graphic artist, and skilled filmmaker, he was uniquely
positioned to make films championing the New Germany and then its
fight against enemies on all fronts. The Soviet Union demanded in 1945
that he be tried for war crimes because of his propaganda and
militarist pictures. His films provide a unique, contemporary insight
into the years from 1917 to 1943, and more of his films are still
banned today in Germany, Austria and France than those of any of his
then colleagues.
