United Newsreel DVDs
What America Showed The World, 1942-1946
During World War 2, the Office of War Information (OWI), in cooperation with the 5 major American newsreel companies, produced United Newsreels - 267 issues, roughly 10 minutes each. This series helped create pro-American sentiment in neutral, recently-liberated, and not-so-neutral countries. One version, dubbed into German, was dropped behind enemy lines. After German surrender, United Newsreels showed the democratic face of America to Germans during the occupation of Germany in 1945-46. See how the most visually-exciting news from the battle fronts is shaped to emphasize American democratic values, a pioneering instance of public diplomacy before the term had been created.
